Home Staging Myths

If you’re getting your home ready to sell, be sure to consider the three biggest home staging myths:

1. “Painting your walls white can make the room look bigger and clean.” Yikes! White is actually not a neutral, and a severe white wall can be difficult to match and a bit too bright for many buyers. It’s not uncommon for sellers to paint prior to putting their home on the market, and the biggest mistake in color choices is to choose a bright white hue. Instead, choose an ivory or cream color.

2. “Burn a candle prior to a showing or open house.” While this one seems innocent enough, we highly discourage our sellers to use any sort of fragrance throughout their home. Often times, buyers believe that the homeowner is trying to mask a scent. Plus, it can be distracting and some folks are allergic to artificial fragrances such as wall plug-ins or Febreze.

3. “Remove any photos of your family.” We typically disagree with this recommendation – in fact, we like to show prospective buyers that a loving family has enjoyed living in the home! While it might not be a bad idea to remove *some* photos (particularly if you have a ton of them and they can look cluttery), we don’t recommend you take them all down.
