If you’re planning on selling your vacant home this spring, you may have considered hiring a professional home stager to temporarily furnish your space.  While every home staging company operates a bit differently, most will provide furniture for some (or all!) vacant rooms in your home for a set period of time.

The home staging company will generally move the furniture into your home and arrange it in an appealing way.  This may extend far beyond beds, sofas, and chairs — in fact, many staging companies include wall art, rugs, and table settings!

Is home staging a good choice for you this spring? Here’s what to consider:

Pros:

-A number of studies suggest that staged homes fetch more money than unstaged.

-Convenience! Many home staging companies will do all of the work for you.

-Staged rooms may provide buyers with a better sense of the space, and attractive furniture may increase the overall appeal of your home.

-Sometimes, a vacant home can feel cold or barren.  Buyers may also be more likely to focus on any minor imperfections.

Cons:

-Home staging costs money! It’s difficult to provide a range of prices for home staging because it can vary widely, but it typically starts around $500.  Unfortunately, the seller has to pay for home staging regardless of whether or not the home sells.

-Some home buyers prefer vacant homes, because they can visualize their own personal items in a clean, open space.

-It may make more sense for higher-priced homes to use a home stager (research suggests that the returns are far better for this market)
