Instead, walk-in closets, energy-efficient windows, and large laundry rooms are on the rise, according to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders. The 400 builders surveyed explained that efficiency and flexibility are the two most important characteristics of a brand new home.

While luxury, specialty features were popular prior to the recession (like custom wine cellars, sunrooms, and whirlpool tubs), the modern buyer is opting for pragmatic and organized layouts and designs. The survey is quick to point out that it’s not all about the decline of luxury, however. In fact, granite countertops are now more popular features than laminate, and expansive walk-in closets are becoming standard.
