Tips for Moving with Little Ones

Moving with Little Ones

Moving can be tough, and we know how getting your little ones ready for the big day can add on to the stress! The age of your child will greatly affect the transition, so check out some of these easy tips for getting organized with very young children (1-5 years old):

1) Get those toys organized! You’d be surprised how many sellers leave toys strewn about the living room when potential buyers come over for a tour. Instead, keep organized by asking your kids to pick a few of their favorite toys to store in a big fun toybox (a great example of one is on our Facebook page today). If your kids can bear to part with some of their toys, consider putting them in the storage, attic, unused closets, or even Grandma’s house.

2) Explain the reason for the move, and what it entails. Little ones don’t always understand what will be coming with (and what won’t be), so be sure to ease their fears by explaining that their favorite toys will make the trip. Consider beginning a countdown, like an Advent calendar, to boost the anticipation of the big move.

3) Involve your little ones as much as possible. If their age permits, you might want to consider allowing them to choose the paint color for their new room, or a new comforter for their bed. Take them on a tour of the new home in advance and point out all of the great features of the new home along with local parks and fun places for them to explore. Once you’re at your new home and it’s time to unpack, make decorating your child’s room into a home-y and comfy spot a priority.
