Lower Gwynedd’s history dates back to the late 1600s when it was founded by Welsh Quakers and known simply as “Gwynedd”. In 1891, the township split into Lower Gwynedd and Upper Gwynedd townships.

Today, Lower Gwynedd includes the villages of Gwynedd, Gwynedd Valley, Penllyn and Spring House. The mailing address for much of the township is either Blue Bell or Ambler.

The township is served by the prestigious Wissahickon School District, which regularly ranks among the very top districts in the state. Gwynedd Mercy Academy is a popular private school in the township.

Lower Gwynedd is conveniently located near the towns of Blue Bell, Plymouth Meeting, Montgomeryville, Fort Washington and Horsham.

However, Lower Gwynedd is conveniently located just five minutes from Montgomeryville, which offers a plethora of shopping and dining options.

The township is home to Old York Road Country Club, and an extensive park system including Penllyn Woods, Oxford Park and Veterans Memorial Park. A number of these open spaces offer pavilions, walking trails, basketball courts, and playgrounds.
