Description
In the mid-1770s two brothers acquired a huge tract of land which they divided between them. The older, wealthier brother and his sons cleared their property to create a working farm, using the stones from the fields to build the two-feet-thick walls of an oversized farmhouse, a huge bank barn and a two-story carriage house. The wood from the trees was hand-sawn into random width planks for the flooring, while tree trunks were rough-hewn into massive main headers, floor joists and rafters. With no electricity or machines the back-breaking work was brutal. But the results were remarkable a stone colonial farmhouse with over-sized rooms, unusually high ceilings, chestnut floors, and three fireplaces including a walk-in with a cooking crane in the Great Room. The family named its homestead Pigeon Run Farm because the headwaters of Pigeon Run, a tributary of Pickering Creek, rose in the woods just behind their new spring house. A century later William F. Bodine bought the property as a working farm and summer retreat. Over the next ten years he added two wings (north and south), increasing the living space to 4,820 square feet along with a full basement and stand-up attic. These additions complemented the original architectural style in virtually every detail while adding an eat-in kitchen, butlers pantry, laundry room and maids quarters, along with a second great room and a master suite with a fourth fireplace, dressing room and private roofed porch. In 1984 the current owners undertook a 30-year renovation, preserving and blending the antique features with modernizations for todays living. These include a state-of-the-art chefs kitchen with granite and tile counters, professional-grade appliances and custom-built cabinetry replicating the Bodine butlers pantry, while retaining the screened-in porch for dining al fresco along with a generous kitchen garden that produces fresh vegetables all summer. The three full baths and one half-bath were completely transformed with marble, Italian tiles and top-of-the-line fixtures. The property retains old apple and pear trees, woodlands, the stone carriage house now fitted with 3 horse stalls, and the remains of the massive Chester County bank barn. Today, Pigeon Run Farm is an outstanding example of a true period restoration. If you would like to continue the story, call today for your private showing.
